Checking Yourself for Lice

Start by gathering the following items:

  • A lamp or bright light source (your phone’s flashlight is a great option) Woman looking at her scalp in the mirror.
  • A fine-tooth comb
  • A hand mirror
  • Conditioner

You should already have most of these items in your bathroom. Once you do, wet your hair and apply the conditioner. The purpose of this isn’t to wash out the lice — it’s to make it harder for them to move around, which in turn makes them easier to spot.

Once you’ve wetted your hair and applied the conditioner, go back to your mirror and part your hair so that you can see your scalp. Obviously, lice moving around is a very clear sign that you do, in fact, have head lice. However, many lice infestations aren’t quite as straightforward. In many cases, you might simply see a number of small white ovals attached to your hair follicles. These are lice eggs, or as we like to call them in the lice removal industry, nits. Nits are easy to mistake for dandruff, so continue parting and combing your hair in different places as you look for lice.

Use your hand mirror to see the back and sides of your head. Having another person in the room can make this step easier, but we know that it’s not always feasible to get help. Continue combing your hair and checking both your scalp and comb for lice.
